There’s a quote that I heard long ago. I’m not even sure where I heard it, but it has resonated with me ever since. This quote has helped me relentless charge forwards toward creating better outcomes for my future.

So what’s this mysterious quote, you ask??

“Do something today that your future-self will thank you for.”

-Sean Patrick Flanery

I can’t even count how many times I’ve done something for “Future Me”. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting gas the night before so I don’t forget in the morning (I’m not alone here, right??). I can’t help but laugh to myself in these moments when I set myself up for success. I made life so much easier for that next morning by just taking the 5 minutes to get gas the night before. Something small like this sets your day off on the right foot and somehow just feels like less effort.

Small changes really can make a big impact. Consider this… in James Clear’s book, Atomic Habits, he talks about the idea of getting either 1% better or 1% worse every day for an entire year. If you choose to get 1% worse by not practicing or doing nothing, guess what happens? In one year your skill or ability is negligible, nearly 0. But what happens if you get just 1% better every single day? One year later you’ll be 37 times better than where you started!

The other lesson this quote embodies is that sometimes a little short-term sacrifice is worth it for the long-term gains. Have you ever heard the saying that nothing great ever comes from staying within your comfort zone? Evaluating the opportunity cost of a decision can be helpful in determining whether or not to move forward with that decision. Sometimes focusing on the present will be more important, but other times giving up free or fun time in the moment can lead to something much greater down the road.

So here’s my challenge to you. What will you do today that your Future-self will thank you for? Will it being hiring a coach to achieve a goal? Maybe picking up a hobby you’ve always wanted to learn? Or perhaps cultivating a deeper relationship with someone in your life? Post a comment with the action you’re committed to taking!
